This month sees the launch of an innovative new platform for hospital patients and users of GP and care services in England – www.healthcompare.co.uk – by our health technology client Health Compare.
Created by former NHS Chief Executive, Andrew Burgess, and a team of healthcare informatics and technology specialists, the new comparison website is free to use and impartial – with no sponsored search results. It is the only platform that helps patients and families in England to compare all available options – paid for by the NHS, by private self-pay or covered by insurance – in one easy-to-use place online.
The site enables you to search for your nearest hospital with the shortest wait for individual treatments and to compare waiting times, quality ratings and % cancelled operations at over 700 NHS and private hospitals in England, with data on over 50,000 consultants shown within each hospital’s listing.
Waiting times for NHS-funded hospital treatment can vary across the country by up to six months, depending on the treatment, so it’s well worth researching your options.
Your Health Your Choice Campaign
GP and TV doctor, Arun Ghosh, is supporting Health Compare’s ‘Your Health Your Choice’ campaign this summer to raise awareness of NHS patients’ rights:
- The right to choose a hospital for non-emergency treatment, anywhere in England, including a private hospital that treats NHS patients (most do);
- The right to change hospital provider if you have been waiting for more than 18 weeks for treatment to start.
National research commissioned by Health Compare has found a significant lack of awareness of these rights. Over half of adults surveyed were unaware they had the right to choose a hospital for NHS treatment; 62% did not know that NHS patients can choose from hospitals across the country; and 81% were unaware that they have the right to ask to change hospital if they have been waiting more than 18 weeks.

"www.healthcompare.co.uk helps you to compare health services in the same way that you might use MoneySavingExpert or Booking.com to choose a supplier. We’re using a similar approach to champion patient rights and consumer choice in healthcare."
